Microsoft introduced notifications to PCs with Windows 10. Although they can be very useful, some of them are just annoying to some users. In this article we’re going to show you how to disable “You Have New Apps That Can Open This Type Of File” notification. So if you find this notification annoying or useless, you might like this tutorial.

In Windows 10, when you open a certain file which can be opened by not just one program on your PC, you get a metro-style toast notification on your screen that says: “You have new apps that can open this type of file.” When you click it, the new dialog will appear where you can choose which program you want to use to open that file and also set a default program for opening that type of files.

  • Download Restoro PC Repair Tool that comes with Patented Technologies (patent available here).

But maybe, for some reason, you want to disable this type of notification. For example, if you don’t want to change the program which opens your file, this notification could be very annoying. Also, it opens when you open a certain file, so it might distract you and interrupt your workflow. Anyway, whatever the reason is, we trust your judgement. So, if you want to disable “You have new apps that can open this type of file” in Windows 10, here’s what you need to do:

To disable this notification, you need to apply a simple Registry workaround, which changes the appropriate Group Policy setting.

  • Go to Search, type regedit, and open Registry Editor
  • Go to the following Registry key:
  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Explorer
  • Create a new DWORD value called NoNewAppAlert, and set it to 1
  • Now log out of your user account and log in again. Or run GPUpdate.exe /force from a command prompt  with administrative rights without logging out, in order to update the policy settings

That’s all, this annoying notification is now disabled. But if you change your mind and decide to enable it once again, just set the NoNewAppAlert value data to 0, and you’re good to go.

  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Explorer
