I think as early as April, 2018, is was being reported, by at least by one website, that Windows Disk Cleanup was going to be replaced with something called ‘Free up Space Now’. Sadly, it is not being called ‘Free up Space Now’. Microsoft have gone for something much more exciting, Windows 10 Storage. Oh, what might have been?
Anyway, we’re not here to criticise Microsoft’s lack of imagination when it comes to names. We leave that for lesser websites. Instead, let’s focus on the snappily named Windows 10 Storage, and how it is a vast improvement on the equally snappily named, ‘Disk Cleanup’.
Goodbye Disk Cleanup, Hello Storage
First of all, please note that if you are not a tester, don’t go searching your machine for the new Windows 10 Storage. It isn’t there, I’m afraid. So far, this is only for insiders in the Fast ring. It is also in machines that shipped on November 7, 2018 running the latest preview build.
If your storage looks like this, you haven’t got the update.
One new feature of this update is that it is now very easy to see where and what is using up your space. But the best thing about it is that you can now get rid of what you no longer want with a few clicks.
This new Windows 10 Storage is much better than the old storage page in settings, which was little different from what you could see when you clicked on ‘This PC’ in the Quick Access sidebar of Windows Explorer.

What the New Windows 10 Storage Will Let You Do
When you get the new update, which is available in Windows 10 build 18277, you will be able to access ‘Storage’ by going to Settings > System > Storage. You will then be able to see what is using up your space, and how you can free it up. You should get these options and more:
- Temporary files
- System and reserved
- Apps and features
- Other
- Pictures
You will then be able to click on any of the options and get more details about what’s going on and how you can fee up the space.
On a less exciting note, the final release of the new Windows 10 Storage will probably not be till April 2019. Insiders will get a look at the final update a month earlier. There will certainly be further updates during the run up to the final release, so watch this space for more.
If you are running low on space now and are not sure how to fix it, here is a simple but very useful guide.
