Unfortunately, Avast doesn’t make the Android installation file (.apk) available for download. You have to download the app through Google Play, which means the only workaround requires you to have another Android device handy with access to Google Play. Then you need to move the app from your Android device to the Fire TV. Google Play can’t be installed on Fire TV devices.

And if you thought, “I’ll just set up the VPN on my wi-fi router,” think again. Avast Secureline VPN doesn’t support router configuration, either.

So if none of that sounds appealing to you, we have some recommended alternatives. We’ll go into more detail below, but here’s a shortlist.

Best Alternatives to Avast VPN for Firestick:

  • NordVPN Our top pick for a Firestick VPN. Makes a Fire TV app with fast speeds and strong security. Unblocks lots of streaming services. 30-day money-back guarantee.
  • Surfshark Budget provider that unblocks most popular streaming services. Unlimited connections.
  • ExpressVPN Insanely fast VPN that unblocks most streaming services. Very secure.
  • IPVanish Solid VPN that unblocks Netflix and makes a Fire TV app.
  • PrivateVPN Smaller provider with good speed and unblocking ability.

We’ll show you how to do the sideloading workaround in this article. But bear in mind that the Android version of the app might not work perfectly on Fire TV, and the app will be designed for a touchscreen interface. So it’s not the prettiest solution.

How to sideload Avast Secureline VPN on Fire TV

Here’s how to set up Avast Secureline VPN on Firestick:

First, you need to allow third-party apps to be installed on your Firestick:

  • From the home screen, go to the top and choose Settings > Device.
  • Go to Developer options
  • Toggle both of these settings—ADB debugging and Apps from unknown sources—to on.

With both your Firestick and the Android device connected to the internet, follow these steps:

  • Boot up your Fire TV and from the home menu go to Settings > System > About > Network
  • Jot down the IP address of your Fire TV device
  • On your second Android device, download and install Apps2Fire from Google Play
  • On the same Android device, download and install the latest version of Avast Secureline VPN from Google Play
  • Launch Apps2Fire and tap the menu icon (three dots) in the top right corner
  • Tap Setup
  • Under IP address of your Fire TV, enter the IP address from step #2
  • Tap Save
  • Select the menu icon (three dots) again and select Upload Apps
  • Tap Avast Secureline VPN under Local apps to upload it to your Fire TV
  • The app should automatically install on your Fire TV

You can launch Avast Secureline VPN from the Apps section of the main Fire TV menu.

How to use Avast Secureline VPN on Fire TV

Now you have Avast Secureline VPN installed on Fire TV, but because it’s the Android version designed for touchscreen phones, you might not be able to access all of the app’s features, settings, and menus.

You could hook up a Bluetooth mouse to your Fire TV if you have one. This is the easiest solution.

If you don’t have a Bluetooth mouse, you can use an app to emulate touchscreen input on the Fire TV from your smartphone.

  • Install the app on both devices: your Fire TV and the smartphone or tablet you want to use as a controller. (Note: you only need to purchase the app once.)
  • Connect both the Fire TV Stick and the other device to the same wifi network.
  • Open the app on your Fire TV and make sure the first item is toggled on. The second (to start the app on boot) is optional. You should see a status indicator near the bottom that says Started. No other action needed here; the app just runs in the background.
  • You can find your Fire TV Stick in the phone or tablet app to connect to it.
  • Click the Mouse option and use the screen of your phone like a touchpad on a laptop. Just tap the screen to click. To scroll, use the s-up and s-down buttons.

That’s it! You should now be able to use Avast Secureline VPN with your FireTV, however, you can now see we weren’t joking when we said it was time-consuming. For a quicker solution check out our Firestick VPN alternatives at the top of this post.
