One of the reasons making Dropbox a universal cloud option for storage is its cross-platform compatibility. Now, Dropbox has launched a universal Windows app for the Xbox One console to expand its list of supported platforms.
The updated Dropbox app gives Xbox users the ability to stream photos and videos to a TV from Dropbox. That means users no longer need to download a local copy to view and share their files. Dropbox for Xbox One also lets users access their files stored in the cloud using various applications, including VLC. Additionally, the app allows users to upload photos and videos to Dropbox from a USB drive or Windows apps.
If you have a huge volume of movies, the app also provides an easier way to stream from your own personal collection of videos to a larger screen. It’s worth noting that Dropbox is the first cloud storage platform to launch on Xbox One. The move also marks the app’s first foray into the TV space, where rivals AllCast and others have long dabbled in.
In addition to the app’s other version, Dropbox for Xbox One also allows users to upload, share files and comment on them. The app also adds the ability to manage files with a new interface optimized for TVs that uses a gamepad or media remote, along with configuration option to automatically upload screenshots and pictures from Kinect to Dropbox.
While Dropbox already has an app for Roku, it limits the videos you can watch to 15 minutes at most. Dropbox for Xbox One, however, removes that restriction and lets you stream videos with no truncation, except for feature-length movies.
It remains unclear when or if a Dropbox app is ever coming to the Apple TV or Android TV platform. Dropbox for Xbox One is now available to download from the Microsoft Store.
