With Windows 7, Microsoft introduced a new volume mixer to let users adjust and set volume levels for individual programs. The volume mixer exists in Windows 10 as well, but the catch is that it supports only classic desktop programs.

The built-in volume mixer in Windows 10 (right-click on the volume icon in the taskbar and click Open volume mixer) doesn’t support modern or Universal Windows Platform (UWP) apps. This means that you can’t use the built-in volume mixer to set or control volume levels of modern apps and apps installed from Store. For instance, you can’t set the volume level for Edge and Groove Music using the built-in volume mixer.

So, how to adjust volume levels for individual apps in Windows 10? Try EarTrumpet.

EarTrumpet: Adjust volume levels for apps and programs in Windows 10

EarTrumpet is a free volume mixer for Windows 10. The EarTrumpet app allows you to adjust volume levels for both classic desktop programs as well as modern apps like Groove Music and Edge.

The EarTrumpet app’s interface looks more or less like the default volume mixer in Windows 10. The functioning of EarTrumpet is also very similar to the default volume mixer.

After installing the app, the EarTrumpet icon appears in the system tray area, clicking the icon shows all running classic desktop programs and modern apps. Launch modern apps and classic programs to see their entries in the EarTrumpet list. Slide the volume bar to adjust the volume level for individual apps and programs.

The EarTrumpet is probably the best alternative to the default volume mixer in Windows 10. If you want to control volume levels for both classic desktop programs and modern apps, EarTrumpet is your best bet.

Lastly, before you jump to the Store to install the app, the developer of the app says that the app might cause your Windows 10 hang due to a bug in Windows 10. So, we recommend you create a manual system restore point before trying the app on your PC. We have been running EarTrumpet on our test PC running Windows 10 Pro (x64) for the past two days without any issues.

Visit the following Windows Store link to install the app. As you might know, you need to sign in to Windows Store with a Microsoft account to install an app from the Store.
