Another one bites the dust! Our favorite social media giant—Facebook, has announced that it is set to stop working on a number of older smartphones from as early as this week. Well if you’re rocking an android or iPhone in your pocket then do not panic, the popular messaging app – which has over a billion monthly active users – will no longer be supported by Windows Phone 8.1 or earlier. Android and iOS users still stay at a relief.
Facebook’s Kind way of Informing
Facebook announced this change by rolling out a small email to its users.
“Thank you for choosing to use Messenger,” the email reads.
We regret to inform you that since the end of March, the app version you’re using is no longer supported and you can no send and receive messages.
“To continue to send and receive messages from Facebook on your phone, update your Facebook app to the latest version.”
Those who use an iPhone or a recent version of Android will be able to continue using the app as normal.
Windows Smartphones-A Steady Decline
No wonder Windows stands to excel amongst desktop operating systems but smartphones didn’t prove out be much of luck, as it has seen a steady decline in users. Recently the market share value has also been dropped from a 1.2% to a new low of 0.3%.
Although, Facebook Messenger isn’t the only app to stop supporting old Windows Phone handsets either. Microsoft ended Skype support for older Windows Phone devices earlier this month. And even WhatsApp confirmed that it would no longer support its messaging app on the platform earlier in the year.
Windows Phone users are set to lose Facebook Messenger support, iOS and Android users have recently been treated to a raft of exciting features. These include a number of new messaging options, along with a mass of animations and cool sticker packs.
So, friends if you’re big fan of Facebook messenger and probably own a Windows phone, then now is the right time to change your handset. If not, then give a small heads-up to all your friends as well who own a Windows phone to save them from any more disheartening news in future.
