Mozilla Firefox 59 is scheduled for release in mid-March. This browser version is expected to set the new standard when it comes to browsing privacy and we’ll tell exactly why this is the case.

Internet users are becoming more and more aware of personal data privacy issues and want to be able to control what information tech companies collect about them.

Much of this data is actually collected when you browse the Internet. Every second, tens of browser trackers and cookies monitor your behavior and the webpages you visit in order to profile you. This information is often sold to third-parties for targeted advertisement purposes.

Well, Firefox 59 will offer users more control over their private data by preventing websites from detecting what webpages you previously visited.

Firefox 59 improves its private browsing mode

As a quick reminder, when you navigate to a new webpage, the respective website automatically receives information about the address of the website that you previously visited. This is called ‘referrer value’.

Unfortunately, the referrer value may sometimes reveal sensitive information. To prevent this type of privacy breach, Firefox 59 will delete path information from referrer values sent to third parties when users enable the private browsing mode.

In this manner, the referred value will contain only information about the web domain.

More tips on how to protect your online privacy

If you’re worried about keeping your personal data private while online, here are a few tips and suggestions that you can use:

To make things worse, browsers also send a referrer value when requesting sub-resources, like ads, or other social media snippets integrated in a modern web site. In other words, embedded content also knows exactly what page you are visiting […] Starting with Firefox 59, Private Browsing will remove path information from referrer values sent to third parties.

  • Install a VPN software

VPN tools can help you hide your traces when online. These programs will replace your real IP address thus hiding your location. They will also prevent third-parties from collecting any information about you.

In case you want to be secure while surfing the internet, you will need to get a full-dedicated tool to secure your network.  Install now Cyberghost VPN and secure yourself. It protects your PC from attacks while browsing, masks your IP address and blocks all unwanted access.

  • Use a privacy-friendly search engine such as DuckDuckGo

DuckDuckGo doesn’t store any information about your search queries. Your IP address is not stored either, so even if someone wanted to collect and sell your browsing history, there would be nothing to sell.

DuckDuckGo’s founder recently answered user questions about online privacy on Reddit. You can read more about the highlights of this Ask Me Anything session in this post.
