But its main power is voice recognition, as Cortana will do anything possible, just by following your voice commands. So, if Cortana is not able to hear you, her functionality will drastically decrease.

If you’re encountering this problem, in this article, we’re going to talk about what to do if your virtual assistant can’t hear you.

Just follow the instructions below, and hopefully, you’ll be able to talk to Cortana normally, again.

What can I do if Cortana can’t hear me in Windows 10?

1. Set up your microphone

  • Right-click on the sound icon in your taskbar, and choose Recording devices
  • Find the microphone you’re using, and make sure it has been set as a default recording device, if not, click on the microphone, and choose Set Default

Configure your microphone

  • Go to Search, type set up mic, and open the Microphone setup feature
  • You’ll be prompted to read a famous Peter sentence, so read the sentence in order to allow the computer to recognize your voice
  • Once you’re done, your microphone will be set up properly.

2. Update the microphone driver

  • Go to Search, type device manager, and open Device Manager
  • Expand the Audio inputs and outputs
  • Right-click on your microphone, and choose Update Driver Software
  • Wait for the installation to finish (if there is an available update)
  • Restart your computer

Installing the wrong driver versions can cause permanent damage to your system. Thus, we suggest updating drivers automatically by using a dedicated tool like DriverFix.

Here’s how to update your drivers with this excellent tool:

  • Download and install DriverFix
  • When you open the tool, it will automatically scan your PC for outdated drivers. During the process, it will crosscheck the drivers against its cloud database and recommend the necessary updates.
  • All that’s left to do is to look at the resulting list and mark the checkboxes for the drivers that you want to install. Of course, it’s even easier to click the Select All checkbox to update all drivers at once.

3. Disable enhancements

  • Right-click on the sound icon in the taskbar, and go to Recording devices
  • Double-click on your default microphone
  • Go to Enhancements, and check Disable all enhancements

4. Adjust microphone levels

  • Open recording devices, and double click on your default microphone
  • Go to the Levels tab, and adjust the scale a little higher
  • Once you did that, click OK, and try to speak with Cortana again
