The all new Start screen and Metro-style apps are the main attractions of Windows 8. Metro-style apps are light and are helpful to quickly consume information. Windows 8 ships with some fantastic Metro-style apps and one can always install new apps from the Store.
While some users aren’t happy with the Metro user interface and apps, a few users who love the Metro UI are experiencing issues in installing and running apps. As some of you may know, to able to download and install an app from the Store, one needs to sign in with a Microsoft Account. Metro apps may fail to run even if you have incorrect security or account settings.
Besides, your PC’s screen resolution must be at least 1024 x 768 or higher to run Metro apps. That is, if the display resolution is lower than 1024 x 768 you can’t run Metro apps. Even though there is a workaround available to run Metro-style apps on lower screen resolution, the workaround might not work on all machines.
And users who are experiencing the issue with an app installed from the Windows Store are advised to uninstall the app first by right-clicking on the app tile on the Start screen and then selecting uninstall option, and then install the same app from the store again. This may fix the issue if the problem is specific to an app.
Another possible solution is to switch your Microsoft Account to Local account and then switch back to the Microsoft Account. You can do this in PC settings > Users. Press Windows + I keys and then click Change PC settings to open PC settings.
To help users troubleshoot issues with Metros-style apps Microsoft has released a small troubleshooter to address a number of known issues that can prevent apps from running. Users who are encountering issues with apps may run the official troubleshooter to automatically fix known issues. Download, run the troubleshooter, click Next button to scan your PC for known issues that prevent smooth operation of apps and once found, it will automatically fix all issues.
Users who are experiencing the issue even after running the troubleshooter and above mentioned possible workarounds may need to use the Refresh PC feature. Refresh PC is a new feature in Windows 8 and resets all settings their defaults without deleting your personal files and Metro apps. But it will delete software that are installed from the web.
