Fortunately, there are several things that can be done to take care of your Surface Book, Surface Pro or Surface Laptop overheating issue. And none of those aren’t any rocket science either, which means those can be implemented easily.

4. Run Surface Diagnostic Toolkit
The SDT is designed to detect and resolve common problems faced with the Surface range of devices.
However, before you begin, make sure you are plugged in to a power source, are connected to the internet and have all the latest updates installed.
Also, make sure you have closed all open programs and have saved all data. Further, keep the serial number of your device at hand as you will be asked to input the same.
Download the tool that applies to the specific version of Windows 10 on your device (Windows 10 Home, Windows 10 Pro etc).
Run the SDT and follow on-screen instructions. It might take 15 mins to even more than an hour depending on your internet speed for the SDT to detect and resolve the issue.
5. Install the latest updates
- Click on Start > Settings > Update & Security.
- You will be taken to the Windows Update.
- Click on the Check for updates button to see if you have all the latest updates.
- Restart if prompted to.
Another way to deal with the overheating issue is to ensure you have the latest updates installed on your device.
6. Perform Clean Boot Troubleshooting
- Open Task Manager by hitting Ctrl + Shift + Esc simultaneously.
- Click on the Startup tab.
- Select each item, click Disable, repeat the step with each startup item to disable all systematically.
- Restart your Surface device and check if the overheating issue still persists.
- If the Surface device is still getting heated up, the startup items weren’t at fault.
- Go Startup tab and enable each startup process again by clicking on a particular process and hitting Enable.
Unwanted processes starting up is also another reason for the Surface Book/Surface Pro/Surface Laptop to heat up. You can get rid of those by performing a Clean Boot Troubleshooting.
However, if your Surface does not get heated up after you restarted the device, it is clear one or more of the startup process were at fault.
You will next have to single out the particular process that is causing the issue. Here is how you can do that.
- Re-enable the first half of the Startup processes and restart the Surface device.
- Check if the device is getting heated up. If not, all the processes in the first half have cleared the test. None of those are at fault.
- Next, disable all the processes in the first half and enable those in the second half.
- Restart the Surface device. Repeat the above process by selecting one half of the process each time and restarting the device. If the Surface Book is not overheating, one of the processes in the other half should be the culprit and vice-versa.
- Isolate the particular process that is causing the issue and disable the same.
- Restart your Surface device and it should not get heated up again.
The point to note here is that it is quite normal for the Surface device to get warm when running processor intensive applications such as Photoshop and so on.
If the Surface Book is not overheating after repeating the steps from 1 to 4, one of the processes in the other half should be the culprit and vice-versa.
However, if you need to work on such apps extensively, you might consider buying a USB fan to drain out the heat from inside the device. That said, it is abnormal if the Surface device becomes too hot to even touch.
