Windows 10 Anniversary Update is available for Windows 10 users starting from yesterday. However, there’s a big chance you still haven’t receive it. The main reason for this is probably because Microsoft decided to roll out the update in waves, therefore not everyone is going to get at the same time.

But, there’s also a chance that Microsoft actually delivered the Anniversary Update to you, but your computer is somehow unable to receive it. In that case, we’ll show you what to do to be able to receive the Anniversary Update without problems.
What to do if the Anniversary Update is not showing up
Solution 1 – Make sure your computer is ready for the Anniversary Update
First and foremost, your computer needs to be enough powerful to receive the Anniversary Update. However, if you were able to install the previous major update for Windows 10, the November Update, you should also be able to install the Anniversary Update. But just in case, if you’re not entirely sure that your computer can stand the Anniversary Update, check out our article to see if your machine is Anniversary Update-ready.
Solution 2 – Run the Update Troubleshooter
When you make sure your computer is one hundred percent ready for the Anniversary Update, the next simplest thing you can do is to run the Update Troubleshooter, a tool for fixing various problems related to Windows Update. To run the Update Troubleshooter, do the following:
- Go to Search, type troubleshoot, and open Troubleshooting
- Open Fix problems with Windows Update under System and Security
- Wait for the wizard to find potential problems
- If any problems are found, the troubleshooter will remove them, and you can check for updates once again
While this indeed is the simplest solution for the problem with Windows Updates, it usually doesn’t get the job done. So, if the Update Troubleshooter didn’t find any problems, try some of the following solutions.
Solution 3 – Run the WUReset script
So, if the Update Troubleshooter didn’t get the job done, you might try with another similar, yet more powerful tool. That tools is called the WUReset script, and it basically solves all bigger problems with Windows Update. To find out more about the WUReset script, and how to make it work, check our article about it.
Solution 4 – Deselect ‘Defer Upgrades’
In case you chose to Defer Upgrades, the Anniversary Update simply won’t show up to you. This option is used when you simply don’t want to receive upgrades anymore. So, if you was a Windows Insider, and you opted out of the Insider Program, there’s a chance you check this option, and then simply forgot about it. For those who’re not sure how to check if this option is enabled, follow these instructions:
- Open the Windows 10 Settings app
- Go to Updates & security > Windows Update
- Go to Advanced Option
- Make sure option ‘Defer upgrades’ is unchecked
So, if this option was indeed checked, you couldn’t receive the Anniversary Update, so unchecking it will definitely help. But if Defer upgrades option wasn’t an issue, try some of the solutions listed below.
Solution 5 – Delete Software distribution folder
To save you time and energy, if you already run the WUReset script before trying this solution, skip it. The WUReset script also deletes the software distribution folder, so there’s no need to do it again. However, if you didn’t run the script yet, you should definitely try with deleting the Software distribution folder.

The Software Distribution folder is where all your automatic updates are stored, and if some of these updates is troublesome, it could prevent other updates from downloading. By deleting this folder, you basically reset your update settings, so you can download further patches and upgrades normally.
Here’s how to delete the Software distribution folder
- Before you delete this folder, you need to stop Windows Update services, to do that, right-click on the Start Menu, and choose Command Prompt (Admin)
- Type the following command and press Enter: net stop wuauserv
- Now, type and press Enter: rename c:\windows\SoftwareDistribution softwaredistribution.old
- Now: net start wuauserv
- And finally, type and press Enter: exit
- Now that the Windows Update Service is stopped, go to Start, and than to Run
- Type: c:\Windows
- This will open the Windows folder, search for SoftwareDistribution and delete it
- Restart your computer
Now all possible troublesome updates are removed, and you should be able to download the Anniversary Update.
Solution 6 – Not running the latest version
In case you’re running the initial version of Windows 10 (July 2015 release), and not the 1511 version, you can’t update your computer to the Anniversary Update. Unfortunately, now that the Anniversary Update is released, it’s almost impossible to install the November Update, and then just update to the latest version.
If you’re facing this problem, the best solution is to clean install the Anniversary Update on your computer, using a bootable media. ISO files for the Anniversary Update are already available, so you can download an ISO file for your Windows 10 version, create a bootable media, and you’ll have the Anniversary Update running on your machine.
